A Walk On t’Long Cut
A Journey on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

Pathways are a film production company based in Calderdale, West Yorkshire featuring journeys highlighting the historical background and ‘Pretty Gritty’ landscapes found in the South Pennines, which is the home of the ‘Grand Depart’ of the Tour de France in July 2014.
Produced in 2002 “A Walk on t’Long Cut” is a walk on the longest man made waterway in Britain namely the Leeds and Liverpool canal beginning in West Yorkshire at Leeds and following the canal to East Marton which is near Skipton in North Yorkshire.
The towpath makes for a beautiful walk, strolling amidst an endless variety of scenery, seeing how this “green corridor” is a protected haven for a host of plants and wildlife.
The walk winds its way from the centre of Leeds before the canal and the River Aire part, following their separate pathways across the Yorkshire countryside towards Skipton in the heart of the Dales.
Many towns and villages are visited along the way and the World Heritage Site at Salts Mill is a most interesting and wonderful building along with its village of Saltaire near Shipley. The “Bingley 5 Rise” is deservedly listed as one of the “Seven wonders of the waterways world” with the flight of five locks having a rise of 20 metres.
We explore East Riddlesden Hall, a 17th century manor house near Keighley, along with Kirkstall Abbey and Museum near Leeds which are amongst the oldest buildings on the walk.
We meet the past regularly along the towpath with a growing sense of awe at the feats of engineering that went into the canal’s construction. There are live interviews with characters met along the way, those just passing through and those who have made the canal central to their way of life.
Towards the end of the walk we arrive at the market town of Skipton and its castle where we are given a fascinating tour with one of the guides before looking round the town. The film finishes at East Marton inviting you to put up your feet and have a well-deserved beer at the local public house.
